Raccoons in the attic, squirrels in the soffits, a groundhog under the shed, or a skunk under the deck: in a region where woods, farm fields, and creeks meet backyards, wildlife and homes run into each other all the time. Zero Pests handles nuisance wildlife across Salem, Gloucester, and Cumberland counties from inspection through removal and remediation.
Signs of Wildlife in or Around Your Home
- Sounds: Thumping or heavy walking in the attic at night (often raccoons), or scurrying and scratching at dawn and dusk (often squirrels).
- Entry damage: Torn soffits or roof vents, chewed fascia or siding, or bent screens.
- Droppings and odor: Droppings in the attic, garage, or crawlspace, or a lingering musky smell.
- Digging: Burrows under sheds, decks, porches, slabs, or along foundations, and torn-up lawn from animals hunting grubs.
- Garbage raids: Trash cans tipped over or bags torn open overnight.
Wildlife Season in South Jersey
Wildlife problems follow the calendar. Late winter and spring are denning season, when raccoons and squirrels look for warm, protected spots like attics and chimneys to raise their young, which makes early detection important. Late summer brings another round of squirrel litters, and in fall animals look for winter shelter.
Bats are a special case. New Jersey’s Division of Fish & Wildlife sets “safe dates” for excluding bats from buildings: April 1–May 14 and August 1–October 15. Exclusions are not supposed to be done during the summer maternity season, when flightless pups may be inside, or during the winter hibernation period. If bats are the issue, we’ll plan the work around those dates.
How Ed Handles Wildlife
Our wildlife service follows four steps:
- Inspection: Identify the animal, find every entry point, and check for young.
- Trapping and monitoring: Set the right traps or one-way doors for the species and situation, and check them on a schedule.
- Removal: Remove the animals using humane methods, in line with New Jersey wildlife rules.
- Remediation: Repair or seal entry points and clean up droppings and nesting material so the space is ready to use again.
Ed will also point out what’s drawing animals in, such as open trash, fallen fruit, pet food, overhanging branches, or gaps under decks, so you can cut down the chance of a repeat visit.
What to Expect
Call and tell Ed what you’re hearing or seeing. He’ll come out, inspect, and give you a plain-English plan and quote before any work starts. Wildlife jobs often take several visits, since traps need checking and animals don’t keep a schedule. Ed will be clear about timing from the start.

Frequently Asked Questions
What animals do you handle?
Common nuisance wildlife such as raccoons, squirrels, opossums, skunks, and groundhogs. Call and describe what you’re dealing with, and Ed will tell you whether it’s a job for us.
Can you get bats out of my attic?
Bat exclusion has to follow New Jersey’s safe dates, April 1–May 14 and August 1–October 15. Ed will inspect and plan the work for the right time of year.
Do you repair the entry points?
Yes. Sealing entry points and cleaning up after the animals are part of our remediation step.
Should I seal the hole myself once the animal leaves?
Wait for an inspection. Sealing a hole with animals or young still inside can trap them and create a bigger problem.
