With about 48,700 residents at the 2020 census, Washington Township is the most populous town in Gloucester County, and most locals just call it “Township.” It was carved out of Deptford in 1836, and its neighborhoods still carry the names of the families who farmed here: Turnersville for the Turners, Hurffville for the Hurffs. Sewell takes its name from General William J. Sewell, a U.S. senator. Grenloch Terrace, the oldest community in the township, was once a Lenape settlement called Tetamekon. Today the town center sits around Washington Lake Park, a 330-acre municipal park off Hurffville-Cross Keys Road with the James A. Yates Amphitheater, while Route 42 carries the commercial side of town. Big suburban lots, wooded edges, lakes and a lot of backyard entertaining shape the pest problems here.
Common Pests in Washington Township
- Mosquitoes: Bells Lake, Grenloch, wooded stream corridors and every clogged gutter or kiddie pool give mosquitoes somewhere to breed, and that hits hardest at summer cookouts.
- Ticks: Yards that back up to woods, parkland or brushy hedgerows put families in tick territory from spring through fall.
- Yellowjackets and wasps: Ground nests in lawns, paper wasps under deck railings and hornets in shrubs are a regular late-summer call in established neighborhoods.
- Mice: Once nights turn cold, mice work their way into garages, basements and the gaps around utility lines.
- Ants, spiders and termites: Odorous house ants, carpenter ants and spiders are constant complaints, and subterranean termites are active throughout Gloucester County.

Why Washington Township Chooses Zero Pests
Zero Pests is a veteran-owned South Jersey company founded in 2025. Ed Newton, our owner-operator, has more than 23 years of hands-on pest control experience, including years with major national companies. When you call, you talk to Ed, not a call center. We’re licensed in New Jersey (pesticide license #92354B), and we use eco-friendly products, applied carefully. In a town where the backyard is where everybody gathers, Ed focuses on making the yard usable again: finding where mosquitoes are breeding, where the nest is, and what’s drawing pests in.
Washington Township Pest Control FAQ
Do you cover Sewell and Turnersville?
Yes. We serve all of Washington Township, including Sewell, Turnersville, Grenloch, Hurffville and Bells Lake.
There’s a yellowjacket nest in my lawn. Should I pour something on it?
We don’t recommend it. Ground nests are often bigger than they look, and disturbing them can set off a lot of angry wasps. Mark the spot, keep people away, and call us.
How far ahead should I book an outdoor party treatment?
Call as soon as you have a date. The outdoor event service is performed 1–3 days before your event so it’s working when your guests arrive.
