Pitman began as a Methodist camp meeting. In August 1871 the first Pitman Grove camp meeting filled a wooded site near the railroad with about 600 tents. The Grove was laid out like a wheel, with an auditorium at the center and twelve avenues radiating out like spokes. Tents gave way to cottages, many with Victorian gingerbread trim, and by 1890 there were more than 400 permanent homes. Pitman became a borough in 1905, and Pitman Grove was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. East of the Grove, Broadway is the business district, home to the Broadway Theatre from the early 1920s, and Alcyon Lake was once the site of Alcyon Park, which opened in 1892. Small wood-frame cottages packed close together on shady avenues are charming, and they’re also prime pest territory.
Common Pests in Pitman
- Termites and carpenter ants: Wood-frame cottages well over a century old, with porches, trim and crawlspaces, are ideal targets.
- Squirrels and other wildlife: Mature shade trees put squirrels right at the roofline, and raccoons find their way into chimneys and attics.
- Wasps and yellowjackets: Porches, eaves, gingerbread trim and shrubs give paper wasps and hornets plenty of nesting spots.
- Mice: Old foundations and closely spaced homes make it easy for mice to move in, and to move between houses, in the fall.
- Mosquitoes: Alcyon Lake and shady, damp yards keep mosquitoes around in summer.
Pest Control Services in Pitman
Our termite inspection and treatment service is a good fit for Pitman’s older homes: Ed checks sill plates, porches, crawlspaces and trim for mud tubes and damage, and he’ll tell you whether it’s termites, carpenter ants or just old water damage. Our wildlife removal service handles squirrels, raccoons and other animals from inspection through trapping and monitoring, removal and remediation. Our wasp and hornet nest removal service takes down nests on porches, under eaves and in the ground. We also offer residential pest control, commercial pest control for Broadway businesses, rodent control, mosquito and tick control, and indoor and outdoor event packages.
Why Pitman Chooses Zero Pests
Zero Pests is a veteran-owned South Jersey company founded in 2025. Ed Newton, our owner-operator, has more than 23 years of pest control experience, including years with major national companies. When you call, the person who answers is the person who knows your job. We’re licensed in New Jersey (pesticide license #92354B) and use eco-friendly products, applied carefully. Ed treats a 19th-century cottage differently than new construction, because the problems, and the hiding places, are different.
