Penns Grove, Carneys Point and Oldmans Township share a stretch of the Delaware River in northern Salem County, and a common history. All three were once part of Upper Penns Neck Township. Oldmans split off in 1881, its name a corruption of “Alderman’s,” and Penns Grove became a borough in 1894, named for William Penn. The township that remained was renamed Carneys Point in 1976. In 1892 DuPont began making smokeless powder at its Carney’s Point Works, and the plant expanded enormously during World War I. Many Italian immigrants from Valle San Giovanni came to work there and settled on Pitman Street in Penns Grove. To the north, Oldmans Creek separates Oldmans Township, home to the villages of Pedricktown and Auburn, from Gloucester County, while the Salem River runs along part of Carneys Point’s southern edge. River, creeks, marsh, industry and older homes all shape the pest picture here.
Common Pests in Penns Grove, Carneys Point & Pedricktown
- Mosquitoes: Delaware River shoreline, tidal creeks and marsh along the Salem River and Oldmans Creek make for heavy mosquito pressure.
- Mice and rats: Rodents follow the waterfront, rail lines and industrial sites, and older homes give them easy ways in.
- Cockroaches: Older multi-unit buildings and food businesses can develop roach problems that spread between units.
- Termites: Moist riverside soil and older wood-frame homes are prime ground for subterranean termites.
- Wildlife: Raccoons, groundhogs, skunks and muskrats move from marsh and farmland into yards and crawlspaces.
