Common Pests in Southern New Jersey

Southern New Jersey’s mix of wooded areas, farmland, and changing seasons makes it a hot spot for a variety of pests. Here are some of the most common invaders we see—and treat—across the region:

  • Ants – From tiny sugar ants in your kitchen to large carpenter ants that damage wood, these pests are persistent and hard to eliminate without professional help.

  • Termites – Silent destroyers that feed on wood and can cause serious structural damage if left untreated. Eastern subterranean termites are especially common in our area.

  • Mosquitoes – A major nuisance in warmer months, especially near standing water. These biters are not only annoying—they can carry diseases like West Nile Virus.

  • Spiders – While most local spiders are harmless, nobody likes them lurking in corners or basements. Some species, like the wolf spider, can look intimidating.

  • Bed Bugs – Small, blood-feeding insects that hide in mattresses, furniture, and cracks. They’re tough to eliminate and spread quickly without proper treatment.

  • Fleas – Commonly introduced by pets, fleas bite both animals and humans and can be hard to control once they get inside.

  • Ticks – Found in tall grass and wooded areas, ticks carry Lyme disease and other illnesses. Regular yard treatments can reduce their numbers dramatically.

  • Carpenter Bees – These large, buzzing bees often drill perfectly round holes into wood surfaces like decks, railings, fascia boards, and sheds. While they don’t eat wood like termites, their nesting can weaken structures over time and attract woodpeckers looking for larvae.

  • Rodents (Mice & Rats) – These pests sneak into homes looking for food and shelter, often through tiny gaps. They chew wires, damage insulation, and spread germs.

  • Cockroaches – These hardy pests thrive in dark, damp areas and multiply quickly. German cockroaches are the most common indoor species here.

  • Stinging Insects – Wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets often build nests around homes, decks, or sheds—posing a risk to families and pets.

  • Silverfish & Earwigs – Often found in basements or bathrooms, these creepy crawlers feed on paper, fabric, and food debris.
